Sand Story is a book, website, and short film about the source to sea journey of San Francisco’s sand. This project explores the long view of this geological cycle, interrupted as it is, by sand mining, dams, the control of agricultural irrigation systems, concrete production & the demands of the built environment. The story includes journal entries, exercises for practicing geological empathy, as well as interviews with environmental justice activists, restoration ecologists, coastal geologists, and environmental rights lawyers. I created all editing, camera/audio work, editing, writing, scripting, and design.
